This week’s Backstage contains a fantastic article on veteran actor John Mahoney (best known as Frasier’s father from the series “Frasier.”) He is presently appearing as the “Old Man” in the Broadway revival of Craig Lucas’ “Prelude to a Kiss.”
Mahoney was 37 years old and unhappy with the direction his life was taking when he asked himself if he had ever done anything that made him happy and fulfilled, and he remembered back to when he was a child and had acted in a school play. He then made a very difficult and, as it turns out, fortuitous decision.
It seems like hardly a week goes by that somebody doesn’t sit in my interview chair here at the office and ask me if they are too old (or too something, or not enough of something else) to go into acting.
My answer is always the same: if you think you are, then you are. Otherwise, come on in!
